Salifou Abdowaman's ability to combine a traditional trade with modern design makes him one of Benin's most remarkable craftsmen. Like many of his fellow Dendi people, he is a cobbler by trade, making shoes, belts, and other products from leather. In 1992, however, he observed a growing demand among Americans and Europeans living in Benin for modern-style leather handbags and backpacks. Using existing designs, he taught himself how to make these items in a variety of styles. Since then, he has added additional items to his repertoire, including pocketbooks, wallets, briefcases, and camera bags. Throughout his work, he is consistent in creating bags with modern designs yet a decidedly African feel. Because of this consistency and willingness to modify his designs according to the customers' preferences, he is extremely popular among Americans and Europeans in Benin.
