Destination: DASSA-ZOUMÉ
If you
like natural beauty, bring a roll of film for Dassa-Zoumé. The city of Dassa
and surrounding Zoumé region is one of the most scenic areas in Benin. Dassa,
located about 60km north of Abomey and Bohicon, is known primarily for its striking
hills and rock formations. In addition to being picturesque, Catholics from
around the world come to see Dassa's hills every August, as it is believed that
the Virgin Mary once appeared here. More active visitors will be especially
occupied, as the hills provide endless opportunities for hiking, biking, and
even rock climbing. Depending on your interests, Dassa can be seen as a day
trip from Abomey, or it can be an overnight stop as you travel north.
Attractions
- "Les Collines" Rock Formations
The rocky hills surrounding Dassa provide magnificent views and interesting folklore. There are several dirt paths leading away from town and toward the smaller villages by way of the hills; most are suitable for walking as well as biking. There is no cost involved in climbing the hills, but ask locals for recommendations regarding which hills you can climb and which path to take. Some of the hills are considered sacred, so asking first will ensure that you respect the local people and traditions. Also, pack food and plenty of water if you plan a long hike or ride, as refreshments are difficult to find once you leave the town.
- La Grotte
The image of the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared once in this cave near Dassa, and there is now an annual pilgrimage to commemorate this event. Each August, around the Catholic holiday Ascension, Catholics from throughout West Africa and further come to this area to pay homage. In addition, the religious celebrations have given birth to more of a social gathering in recent years, creating one of the largest parties in Benin. Plan ahead to take part in these festivities, as the area becomes very crowded. Of course, you can visit La Grotte at any time of the year, and it is free of charge.
- Hippo-spotting on the Ouémè River
The Ouémè River, which passes near Dassa, is known for the many hippopotami that call it home. If you are interested in seeing some of these large animals in the wild, pirogue rides are offered at the Auberge de Dassa-Zoumé hotel. The cost is approximately 3.000 CFA. Inquire at the hotel for more information
